TradingView Rectangle Alerts Gain Greater Than and Less Than Conditions

That is a small feature with a useful edge: alerts can now target the side of a marked support or resistance zone instead of treating the rectangle as one undifferentiated object. For systematic traders, this reduces monitoring friction—but it does not create a signal where none existed.

The alert now understands the side of the zone

Rectangle alerts previously covered four broad states: entering, exiting, inside, and outside the rectangle. Those conditions tell you that price interacted with the zone. They do not tell you whether price moved above the support area or below the resistance area relevant to your setup.

The new conditions are more directional. A trader can set an alert for price moving greater than a selected boundary or less than it. TradingView’s own example is straightforward: monitor the area above support or below resistance.

The important implementation detail is that the alert remains tied to the rectangle. Move or resize the zone, and the alert level updates with it. That is operationally cleaner than maintaining a separate horizontal alert every time the level changes.

I would not call this an indicator upgrade. It is an execution and monitoring upgrade. The distinction matters.

Less screen-watching, not more edge

A rectangle is a visual representation of a zone. It is not proof that the zone will hold, and the new alert conditions do not change that probability distribution. They simply make it easier to receive a notification when price crosses a boundary you have already defined.

That makes the feature useful in workflows where the zone is part of a pre-existing rule set. For example, a trader may already classify a move through the upper or lower side as a condition for further review. The alert can now flag that transition without requiring constant chart monitoring.

But the alert should remain downstream from the strategy. It does not establish whether the move is meaningful, whether the breakout will revert, or whether the market is producing noise around the boundary. Those questions still require a defined validation process and enough sample size to evaluate the outcome.

The retail misconception is predictable: more precise alerts must mean better trades. No. Better event detection is not the same as better expectancy. If the underlying setup has negative expectancy, automation merely delivers the bad news faster.

What I would test before relying on it

I would start by separating the alert event from the trade decision. Record every trigger and classify what happened afterward according to the rules of the strategy. Do not optimize the rectangle after seeing the result. That is how a clean test turns into curve fitting.

The relevant variables are not supplied by the feature itself. They come from the trader’s process: how the zone is defined, what qualifies as a valid crossing event, and what action follows the alert. The rectangle provides structure. It does not provide risk management, position sizing, or confirmation.

That context matters because other recent trading content in the same information cluster is focused on position sizing and backtesting futures day-trading strategies. The common thread is more important than the headlines: an alert can improve operational discipline only when it sits inside a measured framework for risk and drawdown.

So the practical use case is clear. Use “Greater than” and “Less than” to monitor the boundary that matters, especially when the rectangle itself is adjusted over time. Then evaluate the resulting setup as a probability problem. Count the triggers. Track the follow-through. Measure the false breaks. Ignore the temptation to treat a cleaner notification as a standalone edge.
