Beyond Seasonal Fear: How to Actually Manage Risk in September

September has historically been the weakest month of the year for U.S. equities — and according to a fresh CNBC column by Santoli, that's exactly why investors should be on high alert heading into it. I don't disagree with the sentiment. I just think the framing is incomplete. "High alert" is the kind of retail-flavored language that sells headlines but doesn't help you size a position.

The seasonality isn't a signal — it's a prior

Here's the thing about September. The historical drawdown skew is well-documented. Average S&P 500 returns for the month sit noticeably below the mean of the other eleven, with a disproportionate share of the worst single-day declines packed into the first half. The sample size is large enough to reject the null that it's pure noise.

But — and this is where most seasonal commentary collapses — a calendar effect is a prior, not a trigger. You don't short because it's September. You adjust your expected variance band, widen your stop architecture, and reduce size on lower-conviction setups. The retail instinct is to "be on alert," which translates emotionally into panic-exits at the first -1% day. That's not risk management. That's noise-trading with extra steps.

What I'm adjusting in my own book

Three things, in order of weight:

1. Cross-asset confluence. If Treasuries break down and the dollar rips higher while breadth deteriorates, the seasonal prior starts converting into an active edge. That's when I cut gross exposure.

2. VIX term structure. A backwardated curve in the first week of September has historically preceded larger drawdowns. Contango means the market is still pricing complacency, which is the regime I want to be small in.

3. Sector dispersion. When leadership narrows to two or three names while the index grinds higher, the underlying tape is more fragile than the headline number suggests. September tends to expose that fragility fast.

None of this is a "signal." It's a conditional probability adjustment. You build the position size to survive the scenario where the prior doesn't pay off. That's the entire job.

The parallel risk most systematic traders are ignoring

While everyone focuses on equity seasonality, there's a different kind of alert worth tracking on the automated side. The CFTC's Innovation Committee has been signaling a new regulatory focus on AI and crypto trading — and if your algo touches derivatives or digital assets, the compliance perimeter is tightening faster than most operators realize. The details are laid out in this CFTC Innovation Committee signals new regulatory focus on AI and crypto trading.

The edge in September isn't about being "on alert." It's about building systems that assume the worst month is always one bad data print away. That's the only edge that survives the sample.
